Child safety reforms: National and Victoria-specific legislative changes

An overview of changes to national and Victorian child safety laws.

National and Victorian legislative reforms

The Education and Care Services National Law (National Law) and National Regulations have changed.

The nationally agreed reforms will improve early childhood services across Australia by:

  • strengthening the safety, quality, and accountability of education and care services
  • giving families greater confidence in the education and care their children receive
  • ensuring approved providers and educators continue to meet high standards of safety, quality and professionalism.

The Victorian Government has made additional changes to strengthen quality and compliance. This applies to approved providers and services operating in Victoria under the National Law.

These changes build on the national reforms and include stronger safeguards to protect children from harm.

Guidance and information sessions

The changes have been introduced in stages. This gives services time to plan and make the changes.

Guidance is available on the ACECQA child safety webpage and VECRA’s webpages as indicated. The pages are regularly updated with resources to help approved providers and stakeholders understand and apply the changes.
